Packing for a Boating Adventure
When you're new to boating, packing for your first adventure can be a challenge. To help you get started, we've gathered a helpful list of supplies that should be on every boat. With these basics, you'll be ready for day trips and short overnight journeys. For more information, contact us at Boat Country; we also invite you to visit our location in Everett, Washington, serving Snohomish and Marysville.
Start with Safety Gear
Whether you'll be out on the water for a few hours or a few days, make sure your boat is well-stocked with safety gear. Start with the basics: a PFD for every passenger, a first-aid kit, a fire extinguisher, a whistle, and a flare gun. Other items to consider include extra fuel, a satellite phone, a pump, anchor, and a waterproof flashlight. It's always a good idea to keep a map and compass on hand in the event that your navigation system fails.
Food and Water
Any time you leave the dock, it's important to have a supply of drinking water on board. When the weather is hot, bring more than you think you'll need; it'll come in handy if you get stranded. Bring plenty of snacks or meals, depending on the length of the trip. If you're boating with a pet, make sure to pack their food, too.
Sun and Water Protection
Sun protection is essential for any boating trip; the rays reflect off the water, intensifying their effect even on a cloudy day. Sunscreen, a hat, and UV-resistant clothing can help stave off a sunburn. If you're taking electronics such as tablets or phones, it's a good idea to have a dry bag on hand in case the waves pick up.
Extra Clothing
It might seem silly to pack extra clothes for an afternoon trip, but it's worth the effort. If you get wet, or if the temperatures drop suddenly, you'll be grateful to have dry, warm clothes on hand. When you're boating in the spring or fall, pack a jacket, hat, and gloves to protect you in the case of an unexpected storm. Do you have a large boat with a hard deck? Slip-resistant boat shoes make it easy to stay upright in rough conditions.
A boat is a wonderful way to explore new territory and enjoy time with family and friends. When your craft is well-stocked with everything you need for comfort and safety, you can tackle any adventure with confidence and peace of mind. Are you thinking of buying a new boat?
